Hey! It took me about a half a year after i signed on to rover ( around beginning of summer) before I got clients.
In my area ( upstate NY) alot of clients are about a 30 min drive from my house and usually only ask for a sitter for long away periods.
I have about 10 regular clients, though I do accept new clients. My regulars are the ones that do contact me more and i found summer clients to be “better” regulars for me.
If it does start out rocky, deffinately keep to it, it will take time for people to contact you when they need a sitter!
I love Rover - there are sometimes more difficult doggy clients that leave me feeling down (I had a skittish Shepherd who wouldn't come anywhere near me and refused to eat anything I offered for the entire stay, dogs who don't have good manners, etc.), but overall I love meeting new puppy friends and it's really rewarding to have a good walk/stay. Sometimes with young dogs I even get to put my dog training skills to work which is really fun for me, especially when there's a noticeable difference in their behavior!
It only took me a few days to get my first request, and about a week to get one that I could actually accept. But I started in Spring/early Summer and don't live in a town where there's a lot of other Rover competition. I find that as long as you treat the dogs well and keep clients' houses clean (whether it's an overnight stay or a walk!) you will quickly gain a lot of positive reviews and plenty of repeat bookings. And that in turn brings in more clients - whether they see your 5-star rating on Rover or you were recommended by a previous client!
When I first set up my account, I looked at other Rover sitter's daily rates and set my rates comparable to others in my area. It didn't take long for my first booking request. I had profiles on both DogVacay and Rover until the two merged. I've met so many wonderful people (clients) and dogs via DV and Rover. I like it because it's all done thru the website, clients prepay and when they're picking up their dog, our visit is all about how their dog enjoyed they're stay at my house and we don't have to worry about payment.
Since I joined Rover, I've had two requests that turned into bookings and two inquiries that did not, one because the client's dogs at the meet and greet attacked my dog, and the other potential client thought I was in Galveston city instead of Galveston County. I am located on Bolivar Pennsula, which is a vacation destination with maybe less than 1500 full time residents. As far as I know, I am the only Rover sitter on the pennsula. It takes an hour by ferry to get to or from Galveston city. So I don't expect much business from Galveston, unless the client is dropping their pup off on the way to Louisanna's casinos. I get most of my traffic from people living in Northeast Texas going to Galveston to take a cruise.
I treat my clients' pets as if they were my very own. I send lots of pictures and updates to the client so they know that their pup is happy.
When I first joined Rover nearly 5 years ago, there were only 3 other sitters in my area. Now there are more sitters than I care to count. I had my first booking within weeks. I like the control that I have with Rover regarding scheduling and rates. All my contact with Rover support has been great and they have excellent customer service. I admit, that many of my new clients like that I have 150 5 star reviews which has allowed me to charge on the higher end compared to the other sitters.
